The definition of my piece

Following on from last week’s blog, the idea I have for the performance has once again altered. The idea of me performing in a sleeping bag still remains but there are now additional parts added so that the performance appears more authentic. Since there are ten definitions of the word “passage”, I have decided that the structure of the performance will centre on these with the ten different passages relating to each individual definition. For example, one definition of passage is ‘a journey, especially one by air or water’. Relating to this, a piece will be written focusing on the famous North West passage ventures of John Franklin and his crew because it links greatly to the definition stated.

Another key addition to the performance which has been added is the concept of having ten objects from St Peter’s passage triggering off spoken passages when picked up. This directly links the site to the studio as the objects will have actually been in the environment of the passage and perhaps will have developed character. The objects themselves serve as passages which furthers the concept of how passages are everywhere. By choosing these pieces randomly, the performance will also become unpredictable for both me and the audience.

Furthermore, rather than just reciting the passages to the audience, the performance will also involve music which is linked to the underworld. This is because the underworld is a passage famously known for the tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice. In addition, I will also add movement, with the key example being that I place my hands on the studio walls which links to the brown hands in the passage.
