Digital rehab

As liberation is the key component that determines the purpose behind the work we create, I have been considering the idea of using technology to help people through ‘Digital Rehab’. To me both liberation and rehab almost share the same meaning, therefore they work hand in hand. Over the past few weeks, liberation has begun to mean more than freedom, it also means knowledge. Without the knowledge of something or the understanding of a situation, there is absolutely no way one can be liberated from it. Similarly, rehab is widely considered to mean heal. However, like liberation, nothing or no one can heal without acknowledging their wounds first. This use of pervasive media draws my attention because it is a direct communication between people seeking help and the people giving help. What I think makes this particular use of technology amazing is that, firstly, those seeking help can keep those words of encouragement with them and hear them no matter where they are. And secondly, image how many people can be motivated and inspire by one person through one video or one image. In today’s society it possible to save hundreds of lives with one blog post. My thoughts on pervasive media as a tool for rehab lead me thinking about what message are we trying to send out into the world with the content that will eventually fill our QR codes?

It has become apparent that liberation can be found in anything; a random thought from one person may free ten people in ten different situations, simply because the meaning of liberation is unique to each person. Therefore, the most enlightening or liberating experience we could possibly offer our audience is to open their mind to the idea that their perspective is not the only one that exists. So many characters and personalities and life paths flood the high streets every single day, each believe that their perspective of the high street and consumerism is the truth. But what many don’t realise that while the high street is simply a place to shop during the day, at 6pm the high street turns into somebodies home. The shop entrances become a safe place to sleep for someone, until their forced to wake up and move again at the crack of dawn. Perhaps, everyone needs rehab from self- isolation.
